Growing!

Growing!

We have started our work all about growing. We have been reading ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle and done lots of activities about growing.

We looked at our baby photos and talked about how we have changed from being a baby. We said that we now had hair, could walk and talk and didn’t just drink milk. We enjoyed playing, guess the baby, and even got some of them right!

We went into our outdoor space and explored the planters to see what we could find. There were lots of different plants to find, we even managed to pull up some vegetables which last year’s Year 1 class had planted. Some of us were eager to try the vegetables. We also wanted to do some planting of our own.

We had lots of fun planting our seeds. We used compost and a trowel to put in our bottles. Then we made a hole and pushed our seed in. Next we had to water them and now they are on our windowsill. Hopefully they will grow. We will be bringing our seeds home over so we can look after them over the Easter holidays.

We have been playing in our outside area. We set up a florist and took orders on the phone. We made a perfume shop, where we mixed the petals into lovely smelling perfumes. We also had a potting station, to plant more seeds.

We have even been making some creative Spring pictures using different types of mediums. Come and see our giant flower collage on our classroom window!

The Snail and the Whale

The Snail and the Whale

We started our new topic, ‘Our World’ by reading Julia Donaldson’s, ‘The Snail and the Whale.’

We talked about our houses and what they looked liked. Then in our construction area, we designed and built some new houses.

We used a globe and a map of the world to talk about the different places the Snail and the Whale had visited.

In our creative area, we made maps of Walker, because that’s where we live. We enjoyed making whales and snails in the playdough and by drawing them.

We ordered the pictures from the story and used the small world toys to retell the Snail and the Whale.

Celebrations

Celebrations

Our topic this half term has been all about different celebrations. Here are some of the different celebrations we have been learning about.

We learnt all about the Hindi celebration of Diwali. We made rangoli patterns in the coloured rice, listened to and acted out the story of Rama and Sita and made diya lamps because Diwali is the festival of light.

Next we learnt about the Jewish celebration Hanukkah. We listened to the story about the 8 days that it take places over 8 days and we talked about what activities we do on each day of the week. We made a menorah, and then had donuts to celebrate the festival.

We have started our RE topic all about birthdays. It was Ellie the elephants birthday so we made cards, decorated cakes and the classroom and had a party for her to celebrate. We will begin to get ready for the next big celebration…Christmas!

RE – Myself topic

RE – Myself topic

Fr Shaun came to see us and read us a story all about Jesus. We will miss him when he moves to his new parish in Berwick.

We talked about our names and matched them up to our pictures. We learnt that we have a first name and a family name.

We then choose one of our friends names and gave thanks to God for them.

We have been writing our own names.

We listened to a reading about feeling safe and snug. We made our babies feel safe and snug.

In our collective worship, we gathered around our special area and shared our hearts. We had wrote on these our names and drew a picture to show God loves us. We looked at our names and wondered about them. Then we put them into our prayer basket while we listened to, ‘I have called you by your name.’

To respond to our collective worship, we wrote and decorated our names and drew our faces to show how we feel when we hear them
