More Scientific Discoveries in Year 6

Year 6 have loved carrying out investigations in Science this half-term. We have rounded off our topic on light by exploring how light is refracted when passing through transparent materials. We then went on to discover that light is neither white in colour, or any other colour on its own. It is in fact made of all the colours of the rainbow, which when merged together, appears white to our eye. We discovered that if you shine a light through a transparent prism, the light will be refracted and will be separated into the colours of the rainbow.

Even though we had lots of fun making this discovery, we learnt that Isaac Newton had actually first discovered this ‘colour spectrum’ many centuries earlier….. We definitely enjoyed following in his footsteps though!

Casting a Shadow in Year 6 Science

Year 6 have been exploring how light travels and were amazed to find that it only travels in straight lines! The class used torches to cast shadows of their own and made predictions about what size and shape they expected the shadows to be.
