Exploring mass and capacity in Reception

Exploring mass and capacity in Reception

We used the balance scales to find the mass of things. We investigated which was heavier and lighter. Then we tried to make the scales balanced.

We made playdough using different sized measuring spoons.

We compared the capacity of different containers by counting how many scoops it would take to fill them. We then put them in order from smallest to biggest.

In our water tray, we filled and emptied our cups. We learnt half full and nearly full and showed this too. Then we looked at different containers, we filled our containers and poured them into Miss Green’s jug to see which one had the most and the least capacity.

Outdoor Angles in Year 5

Outdoor Angles in Year 5

Year 5 have been revising angles. To help us work on remembering clockwise and anti-clockwise, as well as degrees in quarter, half and full turns, we took advantage of the sunshine and took our maths learning outdoors.

Finding half of an amount

Finding half of an amount

In maths we have been learning what one half is. We know that to half something it must be split into two equal parts. Today we use Smarties to find half of different amounts. To begin, we lined our Smarties up in colours, before checking how many were in each line. We were finding half of our even numbers so got to eat any leftover Smarties, which was very fun!
