Nexus Activity

In celebration of Metro’s 40th anniversary which takes place on Tuesday 11 August, Nexus would love your pupils to be involved as part of their birthday celebrations.

What is a birthday without a very special birthday cake?  They would love pupils to design and make a birthday cake, any cake and the best bit is you get to eat it!

Please send photos or videos of cakes to the email below, so that they can share all of their lovely designs on social media, as part of Metro’s birthday celebrations. The closing date is 31st July.

Our week in school!

Do you know who these people are?

The Wright brothers, Alexander Graham Bell, Frida Kahlo.

We watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt3pry6cWJM  about the Wright brothers and wrote a fact file. We had a go at making paper aeroplanes. We tried different designs. Click here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDiC9iMcWTc to follow instructions to make the one we thought flew best. We had paper plane competitions to see whose plane could fly the furthest.

We discovered how the telephone was invented https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p015z6fk . We made our own telephones. You just need yoghurt pots or strong paper cups and string. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yqB2KFwJCo For them to work, you need to make sure that the string is tight between the two cups.

Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter. She did a lot of self-portraits. We did cartoon self-portraits following this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCDta3CQ9Ak and then we did a portrait, in the style of Frida Kahlo, using oil pastels and some paper flowers.

Here is a maths activity you could try at home. We loved it because we got to eat the smarties at the end. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-he-008-smartie-maths-tallying-and-bar-chart-activity-sheet.

As part of their study the famous author, Julia Donaldson, Early Years made some ladybird stones and pig cupcakes and a sheep! You might like to try these at home.

Year 6 information

Year 6 information

Additional information about Year 6

It is good to see an increasing number of Year 6 pupils return to school.  Children in school have adapted well to school life which now includes a lot of social distancing and independent work.  For various reasons, we understand that some Year 6 pupils will not be able to return this year but please be assured that they are in our thoughts and prayers, and that we will do our best to help them feel included during this time.

The Government stressed that Year 6 were a chosen year group so that they had the opportunity to finish Key Stage 2 and prepare for the transition to secondary school. In their bubbles, children are beginning to have discussions about change and are working on their next steps in their learning.

Normally at this time, there are also a lot of celebrations to organise.  Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances, large gatherings are not permitted on the school site.  As stated in a previous letter, only up to 15 children can work together as a bubble, and our risk assessment clearly states that they must not come into contact with any other groups on site. Therefore, we will not be able to do our traditional leavers’ assembly this year, however, the staff are working hard to make sure that all children receive mementos of their time here at St. Alban’s.

To mark the end of their time at primary school, we plan to create an online presentation with music, photos and videos of all Year 6 children.  If your child would like to contribute to this by sharing their favourite memory of their time at St. Alban’s, in the form of a short video extract (no more than 30 seconds), please send this via email to the Year 6 email address – year6@stalbans.newcastle.sch.uk – by Monday 29th June. If you do not wish for your child to be included in this presentation, please inform us on the above Year 6 email address, again by Monday 29th June, so that we can remove their photos from the presentation.  If we do not receive this information, we will assume that you consent for your child to be included in this shared, online presentation.

As we are using Emblematic as our school uniform supplier, we have commissioned them to design hoodies for each of the children as a gift from us all.  In order for children to get the correct size, you must log on to their website using the link below. This can also be found on our school website and Facebook from Monday 22nd June. To allow you to choose your own sizes, you have been issued a unique code which can only be used once, this was enclosed with your letter sent out on Friday. Orders must be placed by Monday 29th June.

Ms Parker is now in the process of refunding parents for the total amount of what they paid towards the Robinwood trip. You should receive the refund within the next week or so.  Please contact the office for any queries regarding this.

We are receiving transition materials from high schools which we are completing on behalf of your child, and you should now have received information from your chosen secondary school. If you have not, please contact them directly.

We understand how disappointing it is that some of these events cannot go ahead but we have a responsibility to keep all children, staff and their families safe during this challenging time.

Sending you and your families our very best wishes.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Allan and Mrs Gosling.
